Each uniform has its own fabric type. There are different types of uniforms like Office uniform, School uniform, Hospital, Government, Army, Navy, Air force, police, Prison, Sports, Beauticians, Hygiene.
One of the finest fabric types is knitted fabric. Knitted fabric is a textile that results from knitting, the procedure of inter-looping of yarns or inter-meshing of loops. The most used fibres used for knitted fabrics are cotton & viscose with or without elastane. These seem to be single jersey construction and are used for most t-shirt style tops.
There are two types of knitted fabric
- Weft – knit
- Wrap – knit
Weft – knit fabric
Weft knit fabric is one of the most famous fabrics for uniforms
Do you know why?
Weft-knit fabrics are very easy to make and most common. When cut, they will unravel unless repaired.
There are a few kinds of weft-knit fabrics that you may want to check out!
- Single jersey- single jersey fabric is a type of weft knitted fabric. The knitting machine manufactures single jersey fabric and has just one row of needles, whereas with the interlock there are two. As a conclusion this creates just one layer of fabric.
- Purl fabric- is made by knitting yarn as an alternate knit and purl stitch in one wale of the fabric. The fabric is reversible and identical from front and back sides of the fabric. This fabric does not curl and lies flat. This fabric is more stretchable in length direction.
- Rib fabric- it is a pattern. In this pattern vertical stripes of stockinette stitch alternate with vertical stripes of reverse stockinette stitch. When they are equal, the fabric has no tendency to curl, unlike stockinette stitch. Such ribbing looks exactly the same on both sides and is very useful for garments such as scarves.
- Interlock fabric- it is a variation of rib knit construction. Similar to a jersey knit except both front and back of the fabric look identical. Double knit construction makes this a thick knit fabric. The fabric is extremely soft and absorbent.
Wrap – knit
Wrap knit fabric is one of the most common fabrics for uniforms
Guess why ?
Warp-knit fabrics are resistant to runs and relatively easy to sew.
There are two kinds of wrap-knit fabrics that you may need to know!
- Tricot fabric- a plain warp-knitted fabric ( nylon, wool, rayon, silk, or cotton) with a close inelastic knit and are used especially in clothing.
- Raschel fabric- warp knitting resembling tricot but usually coarser and with openwork patterns.
There are many advantages of choosing knit fabric like it is flexible, absorbs moisture, comfortable, hard to sew and more. Once you get the knowledge of knit fabric, then there’s nothing to stop you from choosing the right fabric for you and your family.
